Structured Communication Last week I talked about the difficulties organisations have when trying to communicate with staff. I promised to tell you about a method for doing this effectively, but before I do this I wanted to say firstly, that there is no “product sell” here. What follows are my own thoughts and experience. The method I’m referring to with regards to a structured way of communicating throughout the organisation effectively is: Investors in People Award (IiP) For those of you who are unfamiliar with this award, it is a quality mark that firms can apply for, somewhat like the ISO mark. Organisations go for this award for different reasons: Marketing: Look how nice we are to our people, come and buy from us. CEO or Senior Management Badge This is the feel-good factor for senior managers that they are on the right track and isn’t it nice to be awarded a badge for doing it too? Some do it to increase communication and engagement throughout the organisation, the real purpose of IiP. It is a structured approach to communication that starts to measure and quantify communication and engage staff in a meaningful way. To obtain the award takes management time, however the rewards are many. The costs of the award aren’t steep either, so there really isn’t much of a reason not to do this.
